He relocated to the United States where he completed an infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, followed by a general surgery internship and orthopedic surgery residency at the same institution. He rounded out his medical training with an orthopedic trauma fellowship and spine surgery fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. 

Following his medical training, Dr. Cobos worked in orthopedic surgery settings throughout Texas. He also served in the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps, and volunteered in several university settings as a clinical instructor and professor. 

He is a member of the Cameron County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, Texas Orthopedic Association, and Eggers Society. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. 

Dr. Cobos has also contributed his expertise to many clinical and experimental studies, as well as several peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and other publications.
